Emerging and Rare Infections Screensaver

Funded by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), this interactive bioterrorism screensaver was designed to engage physicians and other healthcare professionals in typical hospital settings to learn about the characteristics of anthrax and smallpox. Its purpose was also to lead them to more in-depth web-based reference materials on these rare infections. The screensaver uses 5 smallpox and anthrax images including one image of a pathology slide and a radiologic image, rotating at a frequency of every 5 seconds. Clicking on the screensaver brings the user to a web site that provides detailed content information on rare infections and potential bioterrorist agents and promotes disease awareness. The web site also offers nine free, online, continuing education case-based modules. This tool is designed primarily for clinician specialists in Emergency Medicine, Radiology, Pathology, Infection Control, Pediatrics, Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, and those that are involved with cases that require Dermatology referral.

Terrorism and Emerging Infections Awareness Screensaver

This screensaver was created by the Center for Emergency Care and Disaster Preparedness at the University of Alabama at Birmingham with funding from a cooperative agreement with the Alabama Department of Public Health and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The goal of this project was to create a learning tool to quickly familiarize first responders with a basic level of awareness regarding the effects of chemical, biological, nuclear, and radiological agents on the human body and the proper reporting, detection, decontamination, and preventative measures that should be implemented. Every slide is accompanied by a question and an answer to each question will appear by scrolling the mouse over the text of the question. Subsequently, clicking on each question will take the user to a portion of the CDC web site that offers more extensive information and resources.
